The drawing that I made of this eye is something that I am really proud of. It took me a while to start it because I kept feeling like I was messing up, but then I watched a few tutorial videos that Mrs Haggerty recommended, which really helped. My favorite part about it is probably the way that the eyelashes came out, because they were something that I was nervous to start.

So far in unit 1, I have completed everything except the 30 minutes of sketching the models and the piece that matches another artist's piece. I have been sort of skipping around between unit 1 and unit 2 this summer so I have a lot of the assignments from unit 2 completed as well. My favorite assignment from unit 1 was definitely the drawing that I made of an eye. I am very proud of it and I brushed up on some skills that I learned in Art 1 last year.
While watching Kirby Ferguson speak about remixes and creativity, I realized that my opinions are very similar to his. We both believe that everything is a remix. I believe that everything comes from another thing, and today it’s hard to create something completely original without getting in trouble for copying to some degree. Ferguson spoke about Bob Dylan, a very well known artist who used the same melodies in some of his songs that were in other songs. As long as the words in his songs are different than those of the songs that were made before him, I don’t really see a problem with it. Ferguson used a quote from Henry Ford, who said “I invented nothing new. I simply assembled the discoveries of other men behind whom were centuries of work. Progress happens when all the factors that make it are ready and then it is inevitable.” Henry Ford is a very famous man who openly admitted to using other people’s ideas, but I think he has the same beliefs that both Ferguson and I share.
In watching The Stakeout and Color me Katie, I've learned more about what it means to observe the world as an artist. Contemporary art is art that is made today and about the world today, and society and how it is affecting people and things. Deb Sokolow taught me that through observation you have the power to change the story to what you want it to be. She observed people and their reactions to objects that she placed in random spots in the city, and observed what people do. They could look at the object, or pick it up and take it, and whatever happened, Sokolow was able to use it and turn it into art. Her artwork is completely based off of observation. In Color me Katie, Katie Sokoler put an creative spin on regular artwork. She made her own art by using photography and then photoshop and then strategically placing them around a busy city and then photographed people interacting with her pieces. Without observing people and society, Sokoler wouldn't ever get the same effect that she gets in her work.
